MY DARLING LEMON THYME

My Darling Lemon Thyme- Recipes from my real food kitchen {a sneak peek!}

My Darling Lemon Thyme- Recipes from my real food kitchen by Emma Galloway

They say that writing a book is up there with childbirth and having experienced both, I cannot disagree. It’s some of the hardest work you will ever do. There’s excitement and anticipation. It hurts like hell. There’s tears and butterflies. There’s joy and disbelief. There’s proud feelings intertwined with sheer terror. And then with one final out-of-body-experience push, it’s just there. You’re baby, sitting right in front of you…

Writing a book has always been something I’ve wanted to do, but it wasn’t until I started this blog (nearly 4 years ago!) that I started to think that maybe my dream could one day become a reality. The book reflects my philosophy that natural, whole food should be flavoursome, fun and easy to prepare. Its food as it’s supposed to be, eaten fresh from the earth to the kitchen, seasonal, nourishing and tasty. But it’s more than just recipes, it’s my life and stories too. My heart and soul lives between these pages and I couldn’t be more proud to finally (!!!) be sharing it with you. That said, I am nervous beyond belief to be sitting on the brink of the release date, I just hope you all love it as much as I do…

So let’s get down to the nitty gritty, all the good stuff about this little book of mine…

– It’s 255 pages long and contains 100 recipes!
– Each and every recipe was written, styled + photographed by yours truly. Every recipe has a photo, even the basics at the end of the book.
– It’s 100% Vegetarian, 61 of the recipes are vegan too.
– The entire book is 100% gluten-free, 77 of the recipes are also dairy-free. (59 recipes are completely cane-sugar free too, if you’re into that kinda thing).
– Around 93 of the 100 recipes have never been published on my blog. There’s a handful of blog favourites that have been given a slight makeover and a fancy new photo.
– The book covers everything; breakfast, snacks, lunch, drinks, baking, iced treats, dinner + desserts.
– My daughter Ada drew all of the little line drawings on each chapter page! Proud mum!
– Many of the recipes are inspired by my childhood favourites including my Sweetcorn + basil fritters, Nut porridge, Millet + Linseed porridge with orange prunes and mums famous Brown rice patties (given the gluten-free twist of course).
– There’s an extensive introduction to all the ingredients I use throughout the book, should you not be overly familiar with all of them.
– In saying that though, I have tried my hardest to steer away from hard-to-find or overly priced ingredients in the recipes within this book. My rule when making it was this: If my mum or sister (back home in NZ where money really isn’t around in excess) wouldn’t be able to afford the ingredients to make a dish, then it didn’t go in the book. There are a couple of exceptions to this rule for one or two recipes that I just couldn’t leave out however!
– There’s a bunch of Vietnamese-inspired dishes which I’ve given a vegetarian makeover, including the Banh xeo recipe I’ve been talking about on here for years!
– There’s a killer pizza recipe, my favourite sweet pastry, two savoury pastry recipes and my sourdough bread recipe included in the book. All gluten-free.
– All the food you see in the photographs is real food and was eaten after photographing. I’m not into using fake food or stylist tricks to make my food look pretty. Real food all the way!
– A few of my favourite recipes in the book are: Quinoa crepes with orange maple syrup, Nut porridge, Kale slaw
with honey mustard miso dressing, Chewy cranberry, millet + pistachio bars, Ginger
kisses, Dark chocolate coconut bites, Banh xeo, Chickpea, pumpkin + kale stew
with chimichurri + quinoa, Pizza with chilli greens, bocconcini + olive salsa,
Strawberry + Thai basil sorbet, Chocolate chills, Chocolate avocado tart,
Strawberry lemon thyme tarts with honey labneh, Brown rice, millet + chia
sourdough bread.

UPDATE! My book is now available at all good bookstores throughout New Zealand, Australia and the UK. For my US readers, there is a US edition in the pipeline due for release August 2015. (I will post links closer to the time for the US release).

Harper Collins NZ have just today released this lovely little book trailer! Feel free to share away!
Also for any Perth locals, we are having a little book launch party at Beaufort Street Books on the 2nd April from 6.30-8pm. Tickets for this will be available early next week. I’ll post more info about this on my Facebook page, so I suggest you keep your eyes peeled on there if you’re keen to come along! There will be nibbles from the book, along with drinks too. Jude Blereau is going to be speaking at the event and there will also be a little Q+A-type interview with me and Jane (the owner of the store). It’s gonna be fun! Also, I’m going home to NZ at the end of April. I’ll share details about what’s happening over there closer to the time. I’m SO excited to be going home!

Lastly I just wanna say a huge and heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you guys. Without you, this would have never happened.
Much love,
Emm xx

  33. So, so excited about your book launch Em! We'll be there with bells on ('we' meaning myself and a few other Perth bloggers). You've done an amazing job with the recipe development, photography, everything that goes into writing a book (which to me is actually very daunting. I am super impressed!). Cannot wait to buy my very own copy xxx

  34. Congratulations Emma. Lovely photos and typography. I am impressed there are mostly never seen before recipes in your book. Well done. I am sure it must have been tempting to publish more beloved blog recipes. How was it keeping you blog and book separate? Did you write recipes and then specifically decide against including the in your blog?

    1. Hey love,
Yes it was very tempting to include more recipes from my blog, but it was really important to me that the book was made up of mostly never-seen-on-the-blog recipes. I've been putting recipes aside for years with the intention of using them in a book xx

  35. Hello Emma, I don't know you and this is the first time I've been to your blog.

But I wanted to let you know – in between mouthfuls of Raspberry, Dark Chocolate and Pistachio Brownie – that I purchased a copy of your book at BigW this week and I'm delighted with it.
As an avid baker I found the flour section insightful but, overall, the recipes themselves are exciting as they are simple and offer further uses for foods that I've only recently embraced.

Well done to HarperCollins too for the layout and presentation of the book. Beautiful.

    With warm regards from Adelaide,
    Sorcha

    1. Sorcha you lovely thing! Thanks so much for stopping by and I'm SO stoked to hear you love the book (and brownie!).
I agree, Harper Collins have done an awesome job with the design and layout, I couldn't be more happy!
      Much love
      Emm xx

  36. Hi Emma,
I just received my copy of your book and wanted to congratulate you – it's brilliant. Delicious recipes, beautiful photos and I really like the intro you give to each recipe – I want to make everything!
