MY DARLING LEMON THYME

Inspire me: Ashlae from Oh, Ladycakes

Ashlae and her beautiful blog Oh, Ladycakes came onto my radar after her Saveur nomination last year (way late to the party, I know!). I pretty quickly fell in love with everything about her and her work, from the stunning waffles which took Pinterest by storm, to her creative raw sweet treats and jaw-droppingly beautiful travel posts which she shares on her Well Travelled Couple site. Her engagement post nearly made me cry and I’m not a romantic in any way. It also made me wish Si and I had been a little more inventive with our proposal (we just kinda agreed that getting married would be a lovely idea, no great romatic gestures involved, sadly!). Basically, Miss Ashlae is a top chick and naturally I wanted to know a little more about what makes this girl tick…

What is your blog about and when did you first push publish?
I shared my first recipe on Oh, Ladycakes in September 2011. At the time I was eating a strict vegan diet – but when I started incorporating eggs back into my regimen, I debated (and struggled) (for months) whether or not the content on the site would remain vegan. It has and will, and now it’s evolved into this place where I share nutrient dense variations of my favorite recipes (raw brownies! raw cheesecake!) alongside straight up indulgent recipes that are indistinguishable from their dairy laden counterparts. I’m a firm believer in balance.

Tell us your cooking philosophy in three words.
Eat more plants.
What’s your favourite season?
Spring. In Northern Ireland. Although the humidity does frightful things to my hair, I don’t think there’s anything more beautiful than the contrast of thick fog rolling over lush, green hills.
Sweet or savoury?
GIVE ME ALL THE CHOCOLATES
What’s your favourite cuisine?
I always say I don’t have a favorite – but I think the fact that I could eat spicy Indian food every day for a year, and not be sick of it, kinda makes it my favorite.
Who are your food heros? And which food bloggers inspire you?
I really admire Michael Pollan for his thoughtful and critical analysis of our food system, and Vandana Shiva for her courage, wisdom, and fight for the seed. Side note: Early mornings (or late nights, if that’s your thang) were made for Vandana Shiva YouTube binges.
Aside from your site, I really enjoy Sidesaddle KitchenThe First MessVegetarian VenturesThe Vanilla Bean BlogSeven Spoons, and a slew of others you can see here.
Do you come from a family of good cooks?
Yes, but more importantly – I come from a family of good eaters who are very critical (and skeptical) of my vegan ways. Aiming to please the butter lovers has definitely helped to shape the way I bake.

What’s your favourite food indulgence?
Extra dark chocolate, french fries, peanut butter, and salt + vinegar potato chips. But not together.
Tell us something about yourself that we wouldn’t necessarily know from reading your blog…
I can lick both of my elbows, I’m really (REALLY) into weight lifting, and I used to play the trombone.
What is one of your favourite posts from Oh, Ladycakes?
The photos aren’t anything worth writing home about, but the small batch cinnamon roll post will always be one of my favorites. The way it captured the real life grittiness of my relationship with Thom; our ability to forgive and move on. Paris. Splashing in cobblestone sidewalk rain puddles. We were living our dream.

Thanks so much Ashlae, much love xx Emm

  1. Yeah! Love Ashlae and her blog. Having been fortunate enough to get to hang out with her a bit, I can assure you that everything you see on her blog is 100% genuine. There aren't many people you can say that about.
