MY DARLING LEMON THYME

Inspire me: Erin Scott from Yummy Supper

I’ve been reading Erin’s beautiful blog Yummy Supper for a few years now, but I still vividly remember finding it for the first time and how excited I was with my discovery. I spent hours pouring over her archives and was even more excited when I realised that her and her little family had just travelled all around New Zealand, Australia and Bali! (You can read her travel posts here). The more I read, the more I felt a strong connection with everything that Erin is about. Like me she feds her family gluten-free without making a big deal about it, they also grow a lot of the fruit and vegetables they eat and after reading some of her answers to this interview that she’s kindly sharing with us today, I can quite easily say that we’ve had very similar upbringings too! Erin was also one of the first people I told when I signed my cookbook deal, as she was in the exact same boat having just signed up to write her first too and I can’t thank her enough for her words of encouragement. If it wasn’t for her I’m not sure I would have had the confidence to take all the photographs for my book myself, and now looking back I know my book wouldn’t have been what it is without them, so thank you once again Erin!!!

What is your blog about and when did you first push publish?
Yummy Supper is my collection of simple, seasonal recipes that happen to be gluten-free. (I started in July 2009.)

Tell us your cooking philosophy in three words:
Eat real food.

What’s your favourite season?
After the gray of winter, there is nothing that makes me happier than a bright, verdant spring!

Sweet or savoury?
Hmmm… I have quite a sweet tooth, but I definitely identify with the loose, improvisational nature of a savory cook. I also like exploring that delicious line between sweet and savory: adding kumquat, pomegranate, or nectarine to a salad or grain dish; or making a not-too-sweet fruit tart with an herbaceous nutty crust.

What’s your favourite cuisine?
I’m deeply entrenched in –  and totally in love with – our California/West Coast food culture. Delectable produce lies at the heart of everything we do, and thanks to our soil and climate, we can grow just about everything. I mean how can you go wrong with tender, lovingly-grown asparagus spears or a perfectly ripe peach? If we don’t mess with the deliciousness of nature too much, we can eat ridiculously well!

I also appreciate that we aren’t constrained by tradition here in California. Our frontier mentality allows us to pull from all sorts of wonderful food cultures – the Mediterranean, Mexico, Japan, South East Asia, North Africa…. It’s liberating to be able to sprinkle in influences from across the globe.

Who are your food heros? And which food bloggers inspire you?
#1 All of the teachers, farmers, & cooks who work at the Edible Schoolyard
#2 Our local farmers: Riverdog, Fully Belly, Gospel Flat
#3 Alice Waters, Deborah Madison, Michael Pollan, Patricia Wells, and Yotam Ottolenghi
#4 There are so many wonderful blogs out there! Here are just a few of my favorites… Dash and Bella, Poires Au Chocolat, Turntable Kitchen, My Little Expat Kitchen, The Year in Food, 101 Cookbooks, Canal House, of course My Darling Lemon Thyme.

Do you come from a family of good cooks?
Yes, but in a very informal, untrained way. My mom is my original cooking inspiration. She’s self-taught (thank you Julia Child) and her cooking is deeply rooted in good health. We’ve always eaten organic in our family, and mom is an amazing vegetable gardener. My dad was also a soulful cook, environmentalist, and supporter of farmers’ rights. Dad and I were always happiest cooking and eating together. He also had a great sense of adventure around food and would take me far and wide for a good bite.

What’s your favourite food indulgence?
Crispy french fries. When done right, there’s nothing better

Tell us something about yourself that we wouldn’t necessarily know from reading your blog…
I’m a messy eater and love eating with my fingers. For me, everything tastes better when it comes from your hands. No surprise, I’ve passed along this habit to my kids. Looking around our dinner table, I see all four of us eating like barbarians. Sigh.

Your up and coming cookbook is due to be released next year. Can you tell us a little bit about it and name one of your favourite recipes from it?

I cannot wait to share the book – I’m so darned proud! Yummy Supper: 100 Fresh, Luscious, & Honest Recipes from a Gluten-Free Omnivore will be published by Rodale, August 2014. All of the recipes are easy, nourishing, flavorful, and gluten-free of course. The book has everything from cocktails to eggs, alternative grains and nut flours, treats from the sea, soups and stews, and tons and tons of seasonal fruit and veg.

One of my favorite recipes is for Baked Eggs on a Bed of Cherry Tomatoes. There is something magical about the way the creamy eggs combine with sweet, herby tomatoes hot from the oven. And why not mop up the tasty juices with a side of warm Polenta Fries? I could eat that dish any time, any day.

Thank you so much Erin! You know I love what you do and I’m so excited to see your book!~ Much love Emm xxx
