inspire me: Molly from My Name is Yeh

yeh-cake-hi-res-1-small

It was about 12 months ago that I first started seeing Molly Yeh’s stunning images popping up all over the show on Pinterest and she had me frantically clicking through to her site when she posted the recipe for her Tahini Halva Muffins. I adooooore halva and to see it being used in such a creative way made me excited to explore her beautiful site My Name is Yeh. In the ever-growing sea of food blogs, Molly’s stands out not only because of her crazily beautiful images, but for her inventive recipes and positive, fun-loving personality that is scattered all over the site. Chocolate cake with halva filling, tahini frosting + a crap ton of sprinkles… anyone? Having spent a little time with her recently at the Saveur Blog Awards in Vegas (I wish we had longer!!) I know for a fact that she is exactly as she comes across on her blog, super cute and so much fun! I’m stoked to have her on the blog today as part of my Inspire me series, thanks Molly!!

Tell us a little about your blog…

I have this massive case of diaries that’s sitting in my childhood bedroom in Chicago. The earliest ones are little Hello Kitty notebooks that probably just talk about boys and cooties and other 7-year-old drama, and as I got older, my diaries became bigger and incorporated photos and real stories. (I can only imagine how many times my sister has gone through that case and read my deepest darkest secrets about my Heath Ledger crush and such.) The original plan was to bury all of my diaries in my backyard for future aliens or people to find, but when I discovered that I could just put everything online, I thought that was so cool and I jumped right on it! It was a really natural transition. My blog is first and foremost my personal diary, and it has taken on various forms: a few years ago it was a restaurant blog, for one month it was almost exclusively a schnitzel blog, and now it’s a recipe blog with some travel adventures sprinkled in. Maybe in the future it will be a lama blog.
Tell us your cooking philosophy in three words.
Salt well, please!
What’s your favourite season?
Winter. And that’s probably just because I found love in a farmer place. The winter is a farmer’s summer, so despite the unthinkable cold where I live, it’s quite a carefree time filled with Brussels sprouts and coziness and plenty of soups.
Sweet or savory?
I prefer making sweets, but I prefer eating savories! Does anyone have a good solution for this?!
What’s your favourite cuisine?
My mom is Jewish and my dad is Chinese, so I grew up eating the cuisines of both of those cultures, and they bring me so much comfort. As well as an expanded waistline. Hehe. These days though, if I had to choose one cuisine to eat every single day, it would be Israeli. It’s so fresh and healthy and flavorful.
Who are your food heros?
Ruth Reichl was the first author I ever fell in love with. After her came tons more authors and bloggers… like, zillions. I pretty much love anyone who is original, genuine, and at least a little bit goofy.
Do you come from a family of good cooks?
Oh yes! My mom had a chocolate business before I was born, and my sister went to culinary school for baking and pastry. I grew up eating home cooked dinners nearly every night and watching my sister make all of her concoctions. My sister and I ended up swapping: she’s in a rock band now even though I was the one that went to music school, and here I am doing this food thing even though she was the one who went to cooking school!
What’s your favourite food indulgence?
Corn dogs, macaroni and cheese, Egg McMuffins, Lunchables, schnitzel, and removing the innards from potstickers and only eating the doughy wrappers.
Tell us something about yourself that we wouldn’t necessarily know from reading your blog…
I can be reeeeeeally quiet in real life. (Just get a beer into me though.)
What is one of your favourite posts from My Name is Yeh?
This one. I didn’t even barf the next morning!

I really enjoy your blog and the recipes of yours that I've tried! Am I just missing it, or is there no way to print your recipes from the blog? I'd like to be able to print them onto paper.

I used to have a print it button, but it disappeared when I changed my blog template awhile back and I can't figure out how to get it back! So sorry, the answer is no… for now. I'm hoping to get the blog re-vamped at some stage in the future and will make sure it's added back again.
